Is it legal to work full time in a company and do business at the same time in Australia?

I am employed full time in a software company. I am also interested in starting my own business in my name, a home based business whilst still continuing my full time employment. It is legally permitted? And what are the implications? What do I need to do initially to set up my small home based business? Any help would be much appreciated.
