Minecraft Server Requirements?

What is the specific needs for a computer to run a minecraft server. What I mean is that if a computer was solely put to run a minecraft server what would the ram need to be and other implications that would affect performance. I currently have a server up but using the same computer while playing generates alot of lag. So I was thinking that I could buy a cheap netbook and put that solely to use as the server.
