Whose criminal case was this?

When I was a child, I watched a horrific serial killer documentary about a crazed man. I can't remember all of the details but what I do remember was this man barging into a house and had beat a young lady in her bed to a bloody pulp (with a blunt metal object, much like a car bumper) without stirring any attention in the house. Luckily enough, she lived. Because she woke up later feeling a terrible headache. She called out to her father who found his daughter with blood all over her face. Later on, the man tried to ambush a woman in her parked car but another man helped her out as he grabbed a cro-bar out of his truck to fend him off. WHAT CASE WAS THIS?
